“ Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
I believe that these qualities, which are inherent in childhood, are probably the most powerful and most neglected in adulthood. It is not hard to process and accept the IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY of a child, however, to think that these qualities can change our lives as adults, is a different story altogether. We are conditioned to ‘grow-up’ and move on from our ‘childish ways’ and as a result we step out onto the stage of adulthood, leaving these awesome qualities in the wings. We don’t realise that we are leaving behind the very things that enable us to create all that we would love; to be the Master Creators of our own experience of life.
It is the IMAGINATION that creates the tension between the old and the new, the known and the unknown and this is the compulsion needed for all human learning. Learning, growth and transformation are the life-long endeavors of the human journey. If we stop learning, we become dull, bored and predefined. IMAGINATION is not about fantasy, although that is an awesome benefit of it; it is in fact an integral part of human intelligence.
Everything that is, was and will be is first imagined. Everything evolves out of nothing. The innovations of our time were not stashed away in a giant book that would enable humans to change and progress in the world. No! Somebody imagined it, they believed it was possible and then they did what was necessary to bring what they imagined into reality.
IMAGINATION happens in the mind and in the soul. The more you surrender to it and believe in its power, the clearer your ideas and dreams become. IMAGINATION is the gateway between the known and the unknown. I would describe it as THE FORCE BEHIND ALL CREATION AND LEARNING. There are no limits in the realm of IMAGINATION; it is superbly limitless.
CREATIVITY is the doing part. It is the part where we act on what we imagine and work towards making it a reality. It is when we do something meaningful with our IMAGINATION.
Although both can be lost as we grow up is seems CREATIVITY is where most people get blocked. How many times have you heard someone say, “I’m just not the creative type”? They may imagine possibilities but feel they lack the capacity to bring them into reality.
In many ways we confine IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY to childhood and to the Arts. The Arts provide a great canvas for these qualities to emerge, however if that is where we leave them, they remain chained up and we lose a powerful agent for creating a life worth living.
Watch a child play and interact with the world and you will realise that there are deeper levels of reality that children see and we don’t. Open your eyes to the truth that this is not ‘child’s play,’ it is a human quality that can bring an abundance of learning, growth, change and meaning to our lives.
So what does this mean for us?
IMAGINATION lies outside of logic and of the ego. I don’t think it is possible to ever understand it completely. As a result it requires belief and surrender on our part. We all have the capacity to imagine and then to bring what we dream about into reality, through CREATIVITY. It does not always go according to plan; but by now, we know this about life. We can also realise that every action step we take towards bringing our own dreams into reality, is a step in the right direction. By embracing and reconnecting with our IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY we can unlock our dreams, we can meet them in this life, rather than only when we sleep.
How do we reconnect with our IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY?
The most important thing to do here is to BELIEVE in your own power. To believe that you are responsible for how you experience life. This is your life and you have the power to live and create one that is authentic and that reflects your heart and all of your deepest desires.
As a result, reconnecting with IMAGINATION and CREATITY means a little honest soul searching;
- Explore your OWN BELIEFS about the part you play in your experience of life.
- Are you a passive player?
- Does someone else have the control in your life?
- Does life happen to you?
- Does life happen by you?
- Does life happen with you?
- Imagine all your deepest desires as if they were your reality and then see where they lead you. This requires a little distance from our logical mind. It requires us to be open to our intuition; the obvious, the subtle and the truth.
- Refrain from saying NO straight away. Say, instead, MAYBE and WHAT IF.
- Go for what you want in life despite the roar of your ‘Shadow Dragon.’
I always try and remember that life is supposed to be good. It is supposed to be fun and full of adventure. There is no rulebook and there is no right way to live. There are only endless pathways. Life is a journey of self-discovery and of creating what you love. Really, what do we have to lose?
